How To Use A Cartography Table In Minecraft

Cartography tables are also used as job site blocks for cartographers. Cartographers will sell you maps of key locations like shipwrecks or the nearest woodland mansion. In Minecraft, you can use a cartography table to expand, make copies of, and lock maps so you can see where you are in the world.

You need the following material:

  1. Two pieces of Paper
  2. Four Wooden Planks (Of any overworld planks)

You can get paper by turning a line of sugarcane into paper on the crafting table. The four wooden planks don’t have to be anything conspicuous. You can mix and match different types of wood to make a cartography table. Place wooden planks in a 2×2 square in the bottom two spots of the crafting menu and place two pieces of paper on top of the planks.

Firstly, right-click on a cartography table to open its UI. Two squares on the left are the inputs and the square on the right is the output.

Secondly, you can rename the map. The cartography table can also make an existing map larger. To make a larger map, simply place the previously opened map in one of the slots on the left and some paper in the slot as well. Now clicking on output will consume both items on the left and give you a more zoomed-out map.

You can do this up to four times. Add your existing map to the left slot and add a compass to it.

The map will also show you the locations of other players, as long as they fit on the map if you’re playing on a multiplayer server. If they do not fit within the boundaries of the map, they will appear on the edges of the map with their assigned color.

If you want to make sure that there are no further changes to the map you created you can do so on the cartographer table. Add the map you want to lock and add a glass pane to the slot on the left. Once a map is locked, you cannot convert it to a locator map.

You can also duplicate maps on a cartography table. To copy the map to another simply take an existing map and an empty map in the cartography table. If the base map is a locator map, the newly copied map will also be a locator map. If you copy a locked map the newly copied map will be locked as well.

You can zoom out on maps without a cartography table, but eight papers are needed to zoom out the map while a cartography table requires only one.
